I recommend for my students to purchase an external flash. Using an external flash with a swivel end is the best way for you to have better control of where your flash shoots. As seen below, I used an externally mounted flash and bounced my light off the ceiling.
Depending on your budget, a name brand (Canon, Nikon, Etc.) external flash can cost you from $200-$500. However, an off brand external flash can save you a lot of money and basically offers the same performance as a brand name flash. The cost of these flashes run in the range of $30 - $80; a lot cheaper!
